A rifle's accuracy tends to increase slightly as the rigidity of the receiver increases, as this slightly reduces barrel deflection during firing. These characteristics combined to make the Remington 788 receiver more rigid and stronger than most, if not all, competing designs, including the Remington 700 which shares the same outside receiver diameter. When machining of these smaller ports is complete there is more steel remaining in the receiver between the ejection port and adjacent feed port, and significantly more steel overall where all receivers have the least strength. The single stack magazine design yields a smaller feed opening in the bottom of the receiver compared to rifles using a double stack magazine well. It has a smaller ejection port than similar bolt-action rifles, and no bolt lug raceways. I figure the scope is worth about 75, so that leaves 275. My 2nd best group was a 3 shot 55 gr Sierra BTHP with 24.5 gr of IMR 3031 – 0.575″ and could be covered with a quarter. I managed to try multiple loadings including 55 gr Sierra BTHP, 55 gr Hornady V-MAX, and Sierra 63 gr Semi point. I would highly recommend the Boyd’s stock and the Timney trigger, which is currently sitting at 2.75 lbs of crisp pull. The new Timney trigger required a minor amount of inletting. With the upgrades, I won’t say it is a pretty gun, but it sure looks better now. It's what Remington should be doing now instead of wasting their time on the Models 710 and 770. That's all the Model 78/Sportsman 78 is - a Model 700 in a plain brown wrapper. It was always a little drab, not ugly, just plain. Remington discontinued the Model 788 after 1985 and attempted to fill that gap with another iteration of the Model 700. This rifle always shot good, not great, but good. The original stock on my Remington 788 223 was a hardwood, possibly birch, and it was a usable trigger, but by no means a good trigger.
